I spent a great deal of time last fall researching wine coolers/refrigerators including the last Consumer Reports review that is a couple of years old. As far as I could tell, they are all manufactured in China, and they all have multiple complaints about breaking down within weeks and up to 6 months or so, and/or arriving in poor condition. I eventually narrowed down to the manufacturer with the least complaints which was Air & Water. In fact, they had reasonably few complaints. I know this is a long review, but I thought sharing my research would be helpful.

Before I get to the model I chose, I need to explain my situation because it seems to be unique among all the reviews I have read for both Air & Water and other manufacturers. My wife and I are what are commonly called __snowbirds___. We are seniors that decided to leave our wintry mountain home for warmer climes during the winter so we purchased a small condominium in a nice sunny place and plan to spend January through April there each year. That leaves May through December that we will not be there. We will be leaving the air conditioning on at a high thermostat setting during the summer as the outdoor temperatures will some times reach 110-155 degrees.

My wife and I are avid wine enthusiasts, keeping a wine cellar at our mountain home in which we allow the wines to age for 5 to 10 years or more depending on the wine. We brought some of those wines with us to our snowbird home in January and are buying more while we are here. So our need for a wine cooler was to avoid spoiling the wines with high temperatures when we are not in residence.

The first criteria was a 48 bottle versus a 32 bottle model. That gets you into choosing between a refrigerator compressor versus a thermoelectric unit. The thermoelectric unit cuts off at about 32 bottles. Larger than that you will probably have a compressor. I saw 2 advantages for us in the thermoelectric: first, there seems to be a lower failure rate with them; and second, they are generally much quieter (think of the noise your refrigerator makes). So we decided on thermoelectric.

The second criteria was single zone versus dual zone. I reasoned that a dual zone of two 18 bottle compartments would keep the temperature more uniform throughout than a single zone of 32 bottles. So we decided on a dual zone.

Those two criteria resulted in us choosing the NewAir AW-320ED 32 Bottle Dual Zone Thermoelectric Wine Cooler.

Our next consideration was temperature. Our main concern was to keep the wines at the best aging temperature which is 54-55 degrees. That happens to be the factory preset temperature (probably for that reason). We are not concerned with keeping red and white wines at their appropriate serving temperature. We keep a log of our wines and consult it in advance of dinner which is the primary time we drink wine. We choose a wine based on the dinner menu and pull it from the mountain wine cellar or snowbird wine cooler about an hour in advance of dinner so we can open it and let it breath. If it is a white, we put it in the refrigerator after opening it to cool down a little more. If it is a red, we leave it out to warm up a little. So we leave both sides at the factory preset of 54-55 degrees. I might also add that that is the same temperature setting the unit will default to when it comes back on after a power outage. Not a minor consideration given the length of time we will be leaving our condo unattended.

And our final consideration was use of the dual zones, basically the left and right sides of the wine cooler. This gets into fitting different sizes of bottles into the cooler. Putting reds on one side and whites on the other didn__t accomplish anything since we keep the temperature on both sides the same. Plus, we don__t necessarily have the same number of reds and whites at any given time.

For this you need to know the actual interior dimensions of the AW-320ED. The racks are 12-1/2___ deep. But the actual unit is 13___ (another _ inch beyond the rack) and the door is recessed a ____, so the total available depth is 13-1/2___. That__s important because an __American___ German wine bottle is generally 13-1/4___. It just fits into the recess in the door. I have not tried a real German wine bottle which may in some instances be a little longer. I__ll have to go into a liquor store and check a few I guess. The interior width is 7-1/2___ and the interior height is 28___.

The other bottle size to be concerned about is the Burgundy/Pinot Noir/Chardonnay type bottle which is fatter. It generally does not fit into the racks provided by most wine cooler manufacturers including the AW-320ED. But, the AW-320ED actually handles it pretty well.

The stainless steel racks are well made and curved for the bottle to lay in. They slide in and out easily and are easy to remove.

However, it will take 8 Burgundy type bottles without any modification: two in the top (since the top of the unit is flat), and two in the bottom (the bottom being flat as well) on each side. By turning the 4th rack from the top over, you will have a curved rack below (on the 5th rack) and a curved (4th) rack above so the Burgundy bottle will fit. That allows for two more Burgundy on each side. The reversed 4th rack will then only hold a single German bottle in the middle so you are losing 2 bottles of capacity, i.e., the unit will now hold a total of 30 bottles.

I found the 4th rack was the only one that would allow the bottles to be placed flat against the back wall. Otherwise you would be placing the bottoms of bottles over the fan units or other parts. That didn__t look like a good idea to me. So the bottom line is, you can do a total of 12 Burgundy bottles and only give up 2 bottles of capacity.

The unit arrived double boxed and was in perfect condition coming out of the box. Screwing the door handles on was pretty simple. As recommended by the manual (which I read ahead of time on the Air & Water website), I made sure it was level and let it stand for several hours before plugging it in. In the mean time, I figured out the Burgundy bottle placement and set that up including turning over the 4th rack. I then loaded the cooler with the 26 or 27 bottles we had on hand. I then plugged it in. It didn__t make any sense to plug it in before loading and having the doors open while I figured out where to put the bottles. One other point: although the manual doesn__t mention it, there is heat venting out the back as well as the sides so I set the cooler about 2___ away from the wall so the heat could dissipate more quickly.

That was about two weeks ago. The unit has run fine with the temperature staying steady between 54 and 55 degrees. The black unit and blue lights do look really nice. It is in my office so I am next to it all day, and I don__t think it makes any noise at all. One warning: the touch controls on the front are very light. I accidently lightly touched the centigrade/Fahrenheit switch on one side without noticing. I turned around from my desk the next day and read 13 degrees on one side! I like to fainted until I figured out what had happened and switched it back to Fahrenheit.

This continues a previous post, where all was looking a little sunnier than presently. I mentioned then that the left side of the cooler failed, and they sent parts. I was able to repair successfully. Unfortunately, the story doesn't end there. The unit worked for a while, but then the other side failed, they sent parts, and I also repaired. I described to Luma Comfort where I kept the unit, how much space was available around it, and what temperature I kept it at (69, the highest, to minimize heat load and electricity). The person there was very helpful. Unfortunately, now the left side has now failed again. Sigh. I wrote again to Luma Comfort, who were perplexed, and asked me a few questions about which lights were on at the back, etc. I answered their questions, and I haven't heard from them for more than 3 weeks. My emails are polite (I'm Canadian) and I've resent a few times, cc'ing NewAir support too, but I seem to have been abandoned. Maybe they realize that my unit is a lemon and have decided to cut their losses. I'll keep trying to communicate with them, maybe phoning. My unit is still under warranty, so I shouldn't be an unwelcome person yet. What good is a warranty if nobody replies? And what do I do with this broken machine?

    Comments:

For Christmas of 2014, my son purchased for my wife and I a NEWAIR AW-321ED Wine Cooler. This Wine Cooler has two separate compartments, one for red wine and one for white wine. It provides 7 slide-out shelves in each compartment that meets my wine storage needs.

The cooler worked great through mid-November of 2015 when I noticed that the left side compartment was not holding the appropriate temperature. This is when Vincent from Customer Service got involved and helped me to figure what was wrong and how to correct it. Without having to ship the unit back or bring it to a repair shop, Vincent sent me the needed parts and walked me through an easy repair. Thanks to his efforts, the wine cooler is like new again. One additional point that is worth mentioning is the wine cooler design. It is easy to get to the components and to replace them if needed. This is why I could accomplish the needed repair without much effort.

I value companies that provide outstanding customer service and I tend to go back to them for other products. Vincent provided such service and I appreciate all that he did to resolve this issue. Since many of the electronic products that we buy today have intricate parts, it is inevitable that something can need replacement. It is the company that honors its warranty and provides human assistance to resolve the problem that should be recognized. This is why I recommend the NEWAIR product and commend Vincent's efforts. Thank you for all that you did.

I did a lot of research on finding a good, reliable wine cooler. I researched many different brands and models and found that NewAir was always getting positive reviews no matter the model. I am getting into wine and want to take baby steps in building a collection and not breaking my budget on a wine cooler. I am very happy with this wine fridge. Does the job and i love having the dual zone temp controls. I would recommend this to anybody!

We've had our wine fridge for nearly a month now. Did a lot of research and decided to go with AW-321ED. Fridge arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. After letting it rest a few hours we loaded in the wine. We keep the reds at 66 and the whites at 46. I like the white wine colder so stick a bottle in the food fridge several ours before dinner. We have a great room layout so fridge is next to the dining room table at the end of the kitchen counter. It is very quiet and looks great. Temp is constant and only seems to fluctuate by 1 degree throughout the day. Goal is to store wine to drink through Arizona summers, no long term storage.

Packaged very well, arrived as scheduled in great condition. Remodeled our kitchen and wanted a wine cooler for under the counter. Initially, the cooler became very hot and fans would not shut off. My husband drilled holes in the kitchen cabinets surrounding the wine cooler. The heat factor is no longer a issue since air can now circulate around the cooler. It looks fantastic and everyone who comes into the kitchen comments on how good it looks. Looks like a built-in cooler.

Attractive design, both on the outside an in, plus all but a champagne design bottle fit just fine. Temps are holding equally as well. Thus, so far so good. The proof is how it does in 6 days, weeks, month and years.

After much research, I chose Air Water to make this purchase. A previous bad experience with a wine refridg made me value the customer service expectation highly. The unit performs as advertised and hit its temperatures precisely and is holding them accurately. My only slight negative is that the mitered joints of the metallic front surfaces are very thin metal and even a little sharp. The top black surface also has a big dimple ( from the factory ) that shows in reflected light. But it keeps wine cool just fine. Noise level is minor as it first is plugged in...and that vanishes as it reaches temp.

Originally purchased two of them for my home office due to the reported quietness. It is true, very quiet. They product a low amount of heat, but certainly better than any other. Of the original two, one zone was having trouble maintaining temperature. The swap out was painless with A & W. Six months later, we have 2 more which we put in our warehouse for long term storage. Do note, we live in Arizona and due to the non compressor format (but this is what makes it so special), by design, 20 degrees below ambient temperature is all it is capable of maintaining. This is not a garage chiller. Nice looking little units. As with most, fat bottles are a challenge, but the bottom 4 slots will accept larger Pinot bottles. Recommended!

Purchased the New Air 321 ED after spending lots of time reviewing comments on many sites. Rather a confusing array of models available.
It arrived quickly and packeded securely by Fed Ex. The inner box had a note,..save for future returns. it was flimsy but tightly packed and lots of protective padding inside. I could remove the NewAir box from the stout fed ex but could not remove the device from the carton without opening it. Instructions were not to tip upside down.

Slid itinto place and read the instruction manual and noted four screws...no mention of what to use for. Had not removed the ties holding the wine bottle shelves until cooler was in correct position and then found handles. ways to install
Will monitor accuracy of temperature over time with separate thermometer.

After reading through the directions we set the unit up in our dining room and let it sit upright overnight before plugging it in and loading it up.

The next day we put our bottles in and adjusted the temperature. It took a few hours for the temperature to adjust on each side, but it has held very well. We did have a couple bottles that were snug fitting on the shelves due to the unique shape of the bottles, but overall we are very excited to finally have this unit and look forward to enjoying it for years to come.

          Excellent Snowbird Unit

Got it as a gift for my husband and he loves it. It fit a lot if bottles but doesn't take up much space, nice led lights, touch screen and most importantly it's quiet.

The wine refrigerator was well packaged and delivered quickly with no flaws or issues. It was easy to set it up without any problems. Its been over 2 weeks with all 32 bottle spaces used and there hasn't been a change in the temperature. I have one side set at 55 for reds and the other set at 46 for whites. So far, I am amazed with the performance and how quiet the refrigerator is. My last wine chiller was a 12 bottle counter unit which had two sides where the temperature could be adjusted independently. Unfortunately there was only 1 door, so every time you opened the door, it would affect both sides. One side also stopped working after 2 years. I'm thrilled with this unit and hopeful it will continue to function as well for the next several years.
