American Mills

American Mills, Inc., first named Spalding Knitting Mills, was founded by Robert Paine Shapard in 1921. The mill began in Griffin, Georgia with its initial products being children’s knit socks.

In 1938, Robert Paine Shapard, Jr. created American Throwing Company which twisted raw silk into yarn for the hosiery industry. In early 1941, the company was chosen by DuPont to experiment and develop a new yarn for use in stockings. This yarn is now known as nylon.

When war was declared in 1941, nylon was frozen to be used exclusively in parachutes. American Throwing Co. made the decision to enter the war effort and was awarded a contract to produce anti-aircraft projectiles. From 1942 to 1945, the company produced 25% of all 40mm anti-aircraft projectiles used in World War II. After the war, the company manufactured a large variety of knitwear items and the company was renamed American Mills, Inc.

From 1954 to 1987, Robert Shapard Jr. and his son William Shapard Sr. partnered with Sears, Roebuck and Company to produce knit underwear, decorative pillows, and table linens. Two divisions of American Mills, Inc were created: Fashion Pillows in 1957 and Fashion Industries in 1976.
